FDA NEWS AND REVIEW
Product Safety Information: If prescribing carbamazepine is considered for patients with Asian ancestry, the patients should be genetically screened for HLA-B*1502. A positive test, indicating an increased risk for serious (even fatal) skin reactions, suggests that carbamazepine should not be started unless the expected benefit clearly outweighs the risks. [Carbamazepine products include: Carbatrol, Equetro, Tegretol, and generic carbamazepine.]
Product Safety Information: A safety review of Chantix (varenicline) is being conducted by the FDA to determine if the product increases the risk of suicidal, aggressive, and erratic behavior.
