Evening bright-light therapy is found to be beneficial in cases of early-morning awakening insomnia.

PERIMENOPAUSE AND DEPRESSION
Among women with no history of depression, transition to menopause, as well as hormonal changes, are found to be associated with an increased risk of depression.

SMOKING CESSATION AND WEIGHT GAIN
Among adults who quit smoking cigarettes, increased appetite or weight gain as a withdrawal symptom is found to be associated with an increase in body mass index (BMI).

PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY NOTE
METHYLPHENIDATE FOR HYPERACTIVITY IN CHILDREN WITH PERVASIVE DEVELOPMENTAL DISORDERS
In patients with pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs), methylphenidate is found to be effective in treating hyperactivity. However, the effect appears to be weaker than that which is seen with typically developing children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and there appears to be a higher occurrence of adverse events.

Approval (new drug) of Chantix (varenicline tartrate). Indication: aid to smoking cessation treatment.

Approval (new drug) of Vivitrol (naltrexone for extended-release injectable suspension). Indication: treatment of alcohol dependence in patients who are able to abstain from alcohol in an outpatient setting prior to initiation of treatment with Vivitrol
