TREATMENT HIGHLIGHTS
PREDICTORS OF RELAPSE IN BULIMIA NERVOSA
Among patients with bulimia nervosa who achieve abstinence from binge eating and purging in response to cognitive-behavioral therapy, data indicate predictors of relapse that may identify patients who require additional treatment.

MAJOR DEPRESSION AND SUICIDALITY
Among patients hospitalized for major depression, the occurrence of a major depressive episode following discharge from the hospital is found to be the strongest predictor of suicide attempts.

STIMULANT TREATMENT OF ADHD AND THE RISK OF SUBSEQUENT SUBSTANCE ABUSE
In a long-term study, “no compelling evidence” is found to support the concern that stimulant treatment of ADHD in children and adolescents increases the risk of subsequent substance abuse.

In a meta-analysis of 6 long-term studies, stimulant treatment of ADHD in children is found to be associated with a reduction in the risk of subsequent substance abuse.

DELAYING OR PREVENTING THE ONSET OF AN INITIAL PSYCHOTIC EPISODE
Among patients manifesting a high risk of psychosis, early and specific intervention is found to at least delay the onset, and perhaps reduce the incidence, of an initial psychotic episode.

OF NOTE
Prevalence of Autism

PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY NOTE
PRENATAL EXPOSURE TO TRICYCLICS AND SELECTIVE SEROTONIN REUPTAKE INHIBITORS
Prenatal exposure to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) is associated with increased risk of premature birth.

TRACKING THE DATA
AUTISM AND MMR VACCINATION
A large-scale study provides “strong evidence” that the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is not a cause of the increased incidence of autism.
