TREATMENT HIGHLIGHTS
DEMENTIA
In elderly people with memory impairment, deficits in 1 or more additional areas of cognition are associated with higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

DEPRESSION
Continuation-phase cognitive therapy (C-CT) is found to be effective in preventing relapse or recurrence of a depressive episode in patients with recurrent major depression.

ALCOHOL USE DISORDERS / SLEEP DISORDERS
Patients in treatment for alcohol dependence who also report having had insomnia prior to treatment are found to be more likely to relapse.

FIBROMYALGIA
A brief, interdisciplinary program for treating fibromyalgia is found to reduce some symptoms.

OBESITY
Requiring physical activity prior to television viewing may play a role in reducing childhood obesity.

ANXIETY / DEPRESSION
The use of complementary and alternative therapies for anxiety and depression is found to be common. This use is often not disclosed to health practitioners.

OF NOTE
The prevalence of obesity among children is found to have more than doubled in less than 1 generation and is associated with increased television watching in children.

PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY NOTE
In patients with bipolar disorder, antidepressant-induced mood switches are found to be less likely if the patients also receive lithium, and more likely in patients with a hyperthymic temperament.

FDA NEWS AND REVIEW
Approval (new indication): Effexor, Effexor XR (venlafaxine) for the prevention of recurrence of depression and prevention of relapse of depression

Product Safety Information: The labeling for Orlaam (levomethadyl acetate), used in the treatment of opiate-addicted patients, has been changed to emphasize the warnings about serious cardiac arrhythmias associated with prolonged QT interval.
