BIPOLAR DISORDER
A review of research finds that psychosocial treatments of bipolar disorder (when used in conjunction with adequate pharmacotherapy) produce clinical benefits and reductions in hospitalization.

POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION
Interpersonal psychotherapy is found to be effective in the treatment of postpartum depression.

ALCOHOL USE DISORDERS
Ondansetron is found to be effective in the treatment of early-onset alcohol dependence.

Sertraline is found to be effective in the treatment of alcohol dependence in Type A (lower risk/severity) alcoholics.

DEPRESSION / PANIC DISORDER
Patients treated for recurrent major depression who have a history of high levels of panic-agoraphobic spectrum symptoms are found to have poorer treatment outcomes.

Patients treated for panic disorder who have concurrent major depression are found to have poorer treatment outcomes.

OF NOTE
An increased frequency of somatic and psychological health problems is found among adolescents who smoke cigarettes daily.

PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY NOTE
No clear difference is found in the speed of onset of the currently available antidepressants.

Increases in triiodothyronine (T3) levels are associated with a decreased risk of recurrence of depression.

FDA NEWS AND REVIEW
Approval (new indication): Zyprexa (olanzapine) for the maintenance of treatment response in the treatment of schizophrenia

Product Safety Information: In changes in the labeling for fluvoxamine (Luvox), warnings have been added stating that fluvoxamine should not be coadministered with thioridazine (Mellaril) or with pimozide (Orap).

Social rhythm disruptions may be more likely to precipitate manic episodes than other types of affective episodes.
