QUICK REFERENCE #19: What proportion of people in the United States use prescription medications?
Recently updated data through the year 2000 have yielded the following estimates of prescription medication use in the United States:
• Almost half of all people take at least 1 prescription medication; and 1 out of 6 people take at least 3 prescription medications.
• Among elderly people (ie, age 65 years or older), 5 out of 6 take at least 1 prescription medication; and almost half take at least 3 prescription medications.
• Overall, between 1988-1994 and 1999-2000, there was a 13% increase in the proportion of people taking at least 1 prescription medication and a 40% increase in the proportion taking at least 3 prescription medications.
• Prescription antidepressant use by adults almost tripled between 1988-1994 and 1999-2000. 10% of adult women and 4% of adult men take prescription antidepressants.
