QUICK REFERENCE #32: What is the prevalence of cigarette smoking in the United States?

Current Smokers: 20.9% of all adults (44.5 million)

• 81.3% (36.1 million) of current smokers smoked every day
• 40.5% (14.6 million) of current smokers who smoked every day had stopped smoking for at least 1 day during the preceding 12 months because they were trying to quit
• 18.7% (8.3 million) of current smokers smoked some days

Current Smokers—by Gender:

• 18.5% of women
• 23.4% of men

The above estimates are based on data from the 2004 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As part of the NHIS, an attempt was made to conduct personal interviews with a nationally representative sample of 31,326 noninstitutionalized civilians in the United States, aged 18 years or older. The interviews were completed with 72.5% of the sample. "Current smokers were defined as those who smoked more than 100 cigarettes in their lifetime and now smoke every day or some days."
