QUICK REFERENCE #51: What are the types of nicotine products approved by the FDA for the purpose of helping people stop smoking cigarettes?
The information presented below reflects Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval status on June 6, 2007. Each of the following types of nicotine products is designed to help a person stop smoking cigarettes by providing relief of nicotine withdrawal symptoms. Each type of product is intended for use as part of a comprehensive behavioral smoking cessation program.
1. Nicotine chewing gum. Available over-the-counter.
2. Nicotine patch (transdermal film). Available over-the-counter.
3. Nicotine oral lozenge. Available over-the-counter.
4. Nicotine nasal spray. Available by prescription.
5. Nicotine oral inhalant. Available by prescription.
