QUICK REFERENCE #47: How can information about ongoing and completed clinical trials be obtained?

The following 2 Web sites contain extensive databases of clinical trials:

ClinicalStudyResults.org includes only completed trials. ClinicalTrials.gov primarily includes trials that are ongoing or soon to begin.

ClinicalStudyResults.org is the site of an Internet database for health care providers, patients, and others. Developed by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), the database contains the results of published and unpublished controlled clinical trials of FDA-approved drugs completed since October 2002. Negative as well as positive results are included. The Web address is http://www.clinicalstudyresults.org.

ClinicalTrials.gov is designed to link interested patients to clinical research. ClinicalTrials.gov was developed by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and is a service of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Web site provides access to information about the location of clinical trials, the design and purpose of the trials, criteria for participation, and telephone numbers for obtaining additional details about the trials. Information about the status of recruitment of subjects (eg, not yet recruiting, recruiting, no longer recruiting) is also provided. The Web address is http://clinicaltrials.gov.
