QUICK REFERENCE #35: What are some illnesses and conditions caused by cigarette smoking?

In 1964, a report by the Surgeon General declared that cigarette smoking causes the following illnesses/conditions:

• cancers of the lung and larynx (voice box) in men
• chronic bronchitis in both men and women

Subsequent Surgeon General reports concluded that smoking causes a number of other illnesses/conditions, such as:

• cancers of the bladder, esophagus, mouth, and throat
• cardiovascular diseases
• reproductive effects

A 2004 report, The Health Consequences of Smoking: A Report of the Surgeon General, added the following to the list of illnesses and conditions caused by smoking:

• cancers of the stomach, uterine cervix, pancreas, and kidney
• abdominal aortic aneurysm
• acute myeloid leukemia
• cataract
• periodontitis
• pneumonia

--The 2004 report also concluded that smoking causes adverse surgery outcomes because of respiratory complications and difficulties in wound healing.

--In addition, by reducing overall health, smoking contributes to increases in medical care services and in absenteeism from work.
