QUICK REFERENCE #34: What percentage of US marriages end in divorce?

The data presented below are from Cohabitation, Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage in the United States (a report released in 2002), which presents data from the 1995 National Survey of Family Growth. 10847 women 15 to 44 years of age participated in that survey. The complete results are available on the Web (see SOURCE, below) and include data broken down by several variables, including: race/ethnicity, education, income, religious affiliation, importance of religion.

First Marriages Ending in Separation or Divorce:

• 20% of 1st marriages end in separation or divorce within 5 years
• 33% of 1st marriages end in separation or divorce within 10 years
• 43% of 1st marriages end in separation or divorce within 15 years

Second Marriages Ending in Separation or Divorce:

• 23% of 2nd marriages end in separation or divorce within 5 years
• 39% of 2nd marriages end in separation or divorce within 10 years

Remarriages After First Divorce

• 15% remarry within 1 year of first divorce
• 39% remarry within 3 years of first divorce
• 54% remarry within 5 years of first divorce
• 75% remarry within 10 years of first divorce
